b. Nov. 1, 1842 at Barbourville, Delaware Co., N.Y., m. (1) Hester M.Hayes Mar. 8, 1870, she died in 1878, m. (2) Hannah H. Hall Mar. 6, 1884. He enlisted Aug. 15, 1862 in Co. A, 144th N.Y. He never missed a march or an engagement till Nov. 30, 1864 when he was wounded at Honey Hill, South Carolina by a bullet through the head, and was left on the field for dead. Comrades found life in him and took him to the hospital and he finally reached home. When Co. A. went to war a sword, sash and belt were presented to them by Hon. H. K. Wheeler, of Deposit, costing one thousand dollars, this to be awarded by vote of the company on their return from the war to the member who had merited it by bravery, general good conduct, or by any specially meritorious act or conduct. The company unanimously awarded it to LafayetteAxtell. After the war he slowly recovered his health and at length was able to open a grocery and dry goods store. He was town collector of Tompkins one year, Justice of the Peace at Deposit for many years. He died March 22,1919. [1]
