Biography

Lucien Everett Axtell was born 7 September 1853 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

He married Maria Balch on 16 March 1875, in his home town. They would eventually have six children together.

Lucien spent a few years farming, after which he was employed by the Michigan Central Railroad for over 40 years, retiring because of age limit (note at Find A Grave reads "From the Kalamazoo City Directory of 1915, he was a baggage man for the M.C. Railroad in Kalamazoo").

After the passing of Maria in 1908, Lucien lived with several of his adult children for a time, then he married again, in 1915 to Jessie née McGregor Mayo. Jessie's son Edward lived with his mother and step father until at least 1920.

At the age of 80, [Lucien] was still well and hearty, living at South Haven, Michigan until his passing in 1938.

1910 is the first Census or possibly any record for Lucien after the loss of his Maria, who passed away in 1908. There are four adult children living with Lucien, which must have been comforting. Edith,34; Elizabeth, 31; Everett, 23; and Henry, 20.
