Biography

Ezekiel was born in 1755, the son of Zebulon Ayers and Temperance Bonham.

Ezekiel served as a private in the Middlesex County, New Jersey Militia during the Revolution.

He first married (1780) to Charlotte Cotheal Freeman b. 16 May 1757 d. 12 June 1793, the daughter of Matthew Freeman. He again married to Meribah Manning b. 16 Oct 1759 d. 13 Jul 1841, the daughter of James and Mary (Ford) Manning and she became his widow when he passed away in 1814.

Note: Temperance Bonham and Zebulon Ayers are believed to have married in 1728. Ezekiel is frequently listed in secondary sources as born in 1730. The face of his grave stone has completely fallen away. The 1755 birth seems late but is the birth year listed by the DAR and in the work of Willis Freeman used by Patty Barthell Meyers.

1814, Mar. 16. Ayers, Ezekiel, of Woodbridge Twsp., Middlesex Co.; will of. Wife, Meriba, such articles as she chooses for housekeeping to be at her disposal: also interest of 1/3 of all money arising from sale of real and personal estate, after debts are paid. Eldest son, Asher, $50. Son, Simeon, $50. Youngest daughter, Charlotte Campbell, all goods purchased at Richard Cutter's vendue; but if she dies without issue, same to be given to two youngest sons, Jarvis and Albert. To three youngest children, Charlotte, Jarvis and Albert, $250 each when 21. Residue to be divided equally among children, Margaret (wife of Jeremiah Freeman), Josiah, Ezra, Charlotte, Jarvis and Albert. Executors—two sons, Asher and Simeon. Witnesses—John Campbell, Neil Campbell, William Martin. Proved May 4, 1814.
