Biography

Maria was born in 1871. She was the daughter of Jonas Ayers and Sophia Butcher.

She arrived in New York City, New York, United States at age 11 months between the middle of November and December 1871 aboard the Hamilton Fish. The family included Jonas Ayers, Sophia, Susannah, Ellen, Mary A, and Mary Maria.[1]

In June 1875 she was living in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[2] The household included Jonas Ayers age 38, wife Sophia Ayers age 36, daughter Susan Ayers age 8, daughter Nellie Ayers age 6, daughter Polly Ayers age 5, daughter Maria Ayers age 5, daughter Eliza Ayers age 3, and daughter Annie E Ayers age 8 months. All were born in England except Eliza and Annie who were born in Chautauqua County, New York.

In July 1880 she was living in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[3] The household included Jonas Ayers age 41 born in England, his wife Sophia Ayers age 40 born in England, daughter Susana Ayers age 17 born in England, daughter Ellen Ayers age 14 born in England, daughter Mary Ann Ayers age 12 born in England, daughter Maria Ayers age 10 born in England, daughter Eliza Ayers age 7 born in England, daughter Anna Ayers age 5 born in New York, daughter Florence Edith Ayers age 3 born in New York, daughter Bell Ayers age 2 born in New York, and son Richard Ayers age 2 months.

George Hammond and Maria Ayers were married about 1887.

In 1900 she was living in the town of Pomfret, outside of the village of Fredonia, in Chautauqua, New York.[4] The household included George T Hammond age 34 born in New York, his wife Maria M Hammond age 31 born in England, daughter Elva M Hammond age 7 born in New York, and son Harold Hammond age 6, born in New York. George and Maria had been married about 12 years. George was a farmer.

In 1910 she was living in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[5] The household included George Hammond age 42, his wife Maria Hammond age 39, daughter Elva Hammond age 17, and son Harold Hammond age 15. George was operating a farm, and Maria was working on the farm. Maria immigrated to the United States in 1871.

In 1920 she was living in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[6] The household included George L Hanmond age 53, his wife Maria Hanmond age 50, and daughter Elva M Hanmond age 26. George was a farmer on a fruit farm.

In 1930 she was living in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[7] The household included George Hammond age 62, wife Maria Hammond age 59, and daughter Elva Mae Hammond age 37. George was a farmer on a grape farm. Maria listed her year of immigration as 1880.

She died 3 July 1938 in Pomfret, Chautauqua, New York.[8] Her obituary was published in the Jamestown Evening Journal.[9]

"Mrs. Maria Ayers Hammond, wife of George Hammond, died Sunday at her home, aged 67 years. Besides her husband she is survived by a daughter, Elva Hammond, at home; and a son, Harold Hammond of Cleveland, O; a brother Richard Ayers of Fredonia; and five sisters, Mrs. Frank Lambkin of Perrysburg, Mrs. Eliza Willnarah of Westfield, Mrs. Joe Taylor, Mrs. Flora Doorman, and Mrs. Cora Balser of Dunkirk."
