Biography

George Ayers was born on 15 July 1860 in Canada East. He was the son of Benjamin Ayer, a carpenter who was born in New York, and Ann J. Ayer, who was born in Canada.[1][2]

George Ayers was listed in the household of his father for the 1870 U.S. Census at New Haven, Macomb County, Michigan. He was recorded as 9 years old, born in Canada and attending school. His mother was born in Canada and his father in New York. He was living with his parents, three of his siblings, a female by the name of Nancy Hill, who could have been George's grandmother, and a carpenter apprentice named William Carson.[3]

George Ayrs appeared again in New Haven for the 1880 census, as a 20 year old carpenter born in Canada. He was living with his parents and six siblings.[4]

George W. Ayers married Sarah Jane Dykeman on 17 October 1882 in New Haven, Macomb County, Michigan. The witnesses were Hellen Lenendall and John P. Dibble of New Haven.[5] George and Sarah had at least six children.

George W. Ayers appeared as head of household for the 1900 census at Mt. Clemens, Macomb County. He was listed as a 38 year old carpenter, born in Canada in July of 1861 and married 18 years. His year of immigration was noted as 1879 and he was able to read and write. He and his wife were living in a rented home with four of their children.[2]

In the 1910 census for Mt. Clemens, George W. Ayers was listed as 49 years old, born in Canada, married 27 years, his father born in Michigan, which was an error. It was noted he had immigrated in 1863 this time. He was living in a rented house on Washington Street with his wife and four children.[6]

George did not appear in the 1920 census. He died on 30 June 1924 in Independance Township, Oakland County, Michigan.[1] He was buried with his wife Sarah in Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Township, Macomb County.[7]
