Charles was born at the house of Mrs Sullivan in Clayton Place, Kennington Road, in the Parish of Saint Mary Newington, Surrey, United Kingdom on 29 May 1826.[1] He was the son of John Wigg Ayers and Anna Ayers (nee McDermott), daughter of Bryen McDermott.[2][3] He was described by his sister Georgina as her younger brother meaning that he was born after her birthdate of 1813.[4] In the 1841 census he was recorded as being aged 15, with an estimated birthdate between 1822 and 1826, and living in Lingwood, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.[5]
While Charles was resident of Nelson, New Zealand, he was from Lingwood, near Norwich, Norfolk, England and he was a master mariner.[6] Prior to living at Nelson, New Zealand he had resided at 16 Buckingham Street, The Strand, Middlesex, United Kingdom.[7]
Charles drowned at sea whilst sailing the coast of New Zealand on 29 October 1857.[8][9] He was the captain of the schooner Ann. He and his crew had sailed from Nelson, New Zealand on 29 October 1857[10] to the West Coast on an exploratory expedition. The boom swept him overboard and even though his crew had thrown him a life-bouy, by the time they'd returned to pick him up he had disappeared. It was supposed that his boots and heavy coat had prevented him from reaching the life-bouy and causing him to drown. [11]
The register of intestate estates in Nelson listed Charles's personal effects.[14]
By the time of his death his mother was a widow but a "lunatic". His two sisters:
Julia Ayers of Lingwood, near Norwich, Norfolk, England - Spinster
Georgina Van Stockhausen (nee Ayers), wife of Otto Van Stockhausen at No. 12 Porteus Terrace, Maida Hill, Middlesex, England[15][16] acted as administrators of his estate, appointing attourney's in Nelson to represent them in order to gain probate in the estate for the benefit of their mother.
