Winchester, Many going home, deserted with Ayers & Sheppard. 51st Virginia Infantry had marched to Woodstock to support Lee's retreating army. Jefferson Ayers, Martin Sheppard, and Henry Amick left the Nighthawks south of Winchester as the 51st advanced. The Ayers are muleskinners for the 51st.
