Biography

Eliza Aylen was born in about 1860, the daughter of Robert Aylen.

Richard Knibbs, aged 24, a labourer of 8 Russell Street, son of James Knibbs, labourer; and Eliza Aylen, aged 24, daughter of Robert Aylen, who was dead; were married at St Frideswide's church in New Osney in Oxford on 15 March 1885 ^[1].

Their son Ernest was born in 1886 ^[2].

Eliza Knibbs died at the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford on 22 August 1886 at the age of 25 or 26 ^{[3] [4]}.

Research Notes

It seems quite unlikely that Eliza was born in Oxford. The only people named Eliza Aylen in the FreeBMD index of birth registrations in about the right time period were born in north west Surrey or south west Suffolk/north west Essex. No birth of a person with the surname Aylen was registered in Oxfordshire before 1839.

She seems to be the Eliza Aylen who in 1871 was living at Monks Garden in Twickenham in Middlesex with her parents Robert and Rebecca and their other children. Her age was given as 11, implying a birth date in 1859 or 1860. Her birthplace was given as Addlestone, Surrey. She was at school ^[5].

In 1861, the same Eliza Aylen was living at Addlestone in Surrey with her parents Robert and Rebecca and their other children. Her age was given as 1, implying a birth date in 1859 or 1860. Her birthplace was given as Addlestone, Surrey ^[6].

That Eliza Aylen was born in 1860. Her mother's maiden name was Brett ^[7].

The "other" Eliza Aylen of about the right age seems to be the daughter of Charles Aylen.

In 1881, the Eliza Aylen born in Addlestone was living at Yarpole in Herefordshire with her married sister Jane Stanton and her family. Eliza's age was given as 20, implying a birth date in 1860 or 1861. Her birthplace was given as Addlestone, Surrey. She was a domestic cook ^[8].

The fact that Eliza did not live long enough after her marriage to be recorded in the 1891 census makes it hard to be certain that she was born in Addlestone.
