Biography

According to the book "Arthur Aylesworth and his Descendants"[1], Philip was born June 7, 1737, married Martha Slocum[2] on June 14, 1762[3]. and then settled in Coventry, Rhode Island. It goes on to list children

Phebe, b. ~1765, m. John Bowdish
Benjamin, m. Aug 2, 1774 Elizabeth Mumford
Ira, b. Nov. 5, 1780, m. Margaret Roach
Sally, b. ~1785, m. Rufus Harrington
Samuel, b. Nov. 22, 1787, m. Mary Titus
John, m. Elizabeth Humphrey
William, m. Phebe Brownell
Hannah, m. David Arnold

(The entry for Benjamin is a typo: his headstone indicates a birth date of Aug 2, 1774, and he married Elizabeth Mumford.)

In addition, we find in the Rhode Island Births and Christenings records a child Alice Aylesworth, father Philip, born in Coventry on September 22, 1772[4].

May 1763, one Philip Aylesworth listed as Captain 3rd Company West Greenwich[5].

Census

1790
Coventry Twp., Kent Cty., RI[6].

Research Notes

  • Philip appears as head of household in Coventry in the 1774 census of Rhode Island[7] (listed as "Aylesworth, Philip Jr.). His household distribution and inferred attributions are
  • one white male over 16: Philip
  • three white males under 16: sons John, William and Benjamin
  • one white female over 16: Martha
  • three white females under 16: daughters Phebe, Alice, and Hannah

Assuming that the information in "Arthur Aylesworth and his Descendants" is accurate (excepting the typo noted above), we are led to two possibilites: there were more children than given above, or else John, William, and Hannah were born by 1774, and Benjamin was born early enough to be included in the census. (A third possibility is that Alice is not their child or that she died by 1774 and there was another girl not in the record, but both of these seem unlikely to this researcher.)
