William was born in 1867 at 21 St Leonard's Square, Kentish Town, Paddington, London to William Sedcole Aylett and Sarah Ann Aylett formally Ibell. His father's profession is recorded as porter. [1] William was baptised on 13 October 1867 at Holy Trinity, Haverstock Hill, Camden, London.[2]
In the 1871 census William is living with his parents and siblings (Mary, Susan, Sarah and Ellen) at 9 George Street, Kensington, London. [3]The 1881 census sees William still residing with his parents and brother Walter at 135 Herries Street, Chelsea, London.[4]
At the age of 14, William was employed by Great Western Railways at Paddington Goods Yard as a Slipper. His initial wages was 9 shillings which rose to 17 shillings by 1886. At the age of 16 he became a Switcher and two years later he became a Loader in 1886. He resigned in May 1888.[5]
On 17 July 1887, William married Jane Cummings at St Jude, Chelsea, London. William's residence is given as 117 Herries Street, Chelsea, London and his profession is recorded as porter. His father is recorded at William Aylett, labourer. The witnesses were Albert Sangwell and Mary Ann Sangwell.[6]
Although no birth certificate can be located, Francis Aylett (aka Frank) was born prior to the wedding (1886). There is speculation that William Aylett may not be the father although this is uncertain. Around 1911, Francis is known as Francis Cummings.[7]
The 1891 census see William and his wife and children (Frank and Ellen) living at 47 2nd Avenue, Chelsea, London working as a laundry machinist.[8] The 1901 census his is living with his wife Jane as well as children Ellen, Daisy, Lydia and Edith at 1 Prospect Hope Cottage, Kensal Road, Chelsea, London working as a Laundryman.[9] The 1911 census shows him living with Jane and children Frank, Ellen, Daisy, Lydia, Edith, May, John and my grandfather William working as a laundry carman at 18 Albert Road, Willesden, Middlesex.[10]
William moved with his wife to 185 Carlton Vale, Willesden, Middlesex and can be traced living at that address from 1923 until his death in 1937.[11]
William Aylett died whilst visiting his son William's residence at 1a York Mansions, Earl's Court, London in 1937. The cause of death is recorded as coronary thrombosis following a post mortem. His occupation is cited was cited as 'formerly a laundry wash houseman'.[12] His grandson recalls the moment William dies as his was sitting on his lap peeling an orange at the time. Antony Aylett told his father that grandpa's head had 'fallen over' and that he had gone to sleep.[13]
