Giles Aylett was a churchman born in Chipping Onger [1], a baptism that matches his declared age at marriage, father Thomas Aylett. He lived in Great Sutton, Essex at the end of his life.
In 1606, he married Mary Thurgood at Chelmsford by license at the age of 39; she was 23.[2] . The Parish Register entry describes him as 'gentleman and parson of the parish church of Great Sutton'.
They had at least four children, referenced in the wills of his wife and their son John:
He was a Cambridge alumnus, with a B.A. in 1585/6 and M.A. in 1589.[3]
The Church of England Clergy Database [4] shows him him as licensed as a preacher in London in 1595 [5] - and appointed as the rector of Great Sutton only at 17/9/1628 by Laud [6]. However, given the Parish Register entry for his marriage cited above, he clearly already had some formal position there, perhaps as a stand-in for the then rector.
A Giles Aylett was discharged at a court of assizes in Chelmsford, Essex in 1587 with a group of other prisoners, charge not recorded.[7] but this is not the only Giles Aylett around in Essex in this period so it may not be him, especially as it overlaps with his studies at Cambridge.
The Clergy of the Church of England Database says that he died on 30 Sep 1630.[8]
A Giles Aylett was a churchwarden in Sutton and seems to have contributed a bell to the church, which has the inscription "J. C. Giles Aylett, Churchwarden 1638."[9] This may be the younger Giles Aylett (who is evidenced in his mother's and brother's wills), or it may be a memorial or testamentary gift to the church since he evidently died in 1630.
His will is at the London Metropolitan Archive:
This suggests the died at Great Sutton.
The London marriage license of Giles Aylett indicates that his bride was the step daughter of William Aylett of Magdalen Laver, so it is possible that he was related to the Magdalen Laver Ayletts. He was not a son of William Aylett "of Rivenhall", whose 1583 will does not mention a son named Giles.[11] Giles also supplied a marriage licence for William's son John when he married the widow of a cousin only a few months after that cousin died.
If his father was indeed a Thomas Aylett of Chipping Ongar, it is not inconceivable that he was the younger brother of the Magdalen Laver William Aylett.
Note: Should not be confused with Giles Ayliff/Aleph, who was vicar of Heversham and d. 1590.
