Biography

Elizabeth (Aylett) Lambe married John Lambe. She died fairly young, in or before 1581, when her father's will states that she was deceased. At the time, they had 4 children living, one of whom, also John Lambe (b. ca. 1568), was later knighted and appointed chancellor and keeper of the great seal to Queen Henrietta Maria. Like some of his Aylett relations, he was a Royalist and suffered sequestration under the Commonwealth.

Both the will of William Aylett[1] and a heralds visitation[2] indicate that she was the daughter of William and Alice Aylett. William Aylett's will dated "July 27, 1581" states that she was deceased and had been the wife of John Lambe. With two contemporary or near contemporary primary sources in agreement, there seems to be little room to doubt that this is true, internet genealogy sites notwithstanding.

Research Notes

Numerous internet sources indicate that her son Thomas Jr. was born in 1596, which is clearly impossible. As usual, Find-A-Grave gives a series of unsourced and impossible dates. Her father's will lists her children as John, Thomas, Edward, and Susan Lambe, and the 1634 Essex visitation states that her son John was Sir John Lambe, Dean of the Arches. John was a fairly important person in his time, and actually has his own wikipedia article; a biographer estimated a birth date of 1566 for him, which is clearly consistent with the will and the visitation, and obviously argues that his mother's birthdate was 1550 or earlier, rather than the bizarre 1570 date given on Find-A-Grave.

The present profile previously attached another husband, Thomas Lambe (itself unsourced), based on no evidence at all other than Find-A-Grave. Clearly, she died quite young, and this is not at all credible.

Some notes copied from Find-A-Grave - use with caution:

My Lambe/Lamb (eventually dropped the e) line descends from here and Thomas (1570-1599) as follows:

Thomas Lamb (1596-1646) First wife was Elzabeth and his second wife was Dorothy Harbottle (m. 7/16/1640) (1619-1698), and their son,

Abiel Lamb (1646-1710) and Elizabeth Clark Lamb (1648-1692) and his son,

Samuel Lamb (1685-1728) and Esther Joslin Lamb (1681-1729) and their son,

Brazillai Lamb (1712-1752) and Sarah Knowlton Lamb (1710-1752), and their son,

Joseph Lamb (1747-1823) and Relief Cobleigh Lamb (1760-1817)and their son,

Oliver Lamb (1783-1865) and Sarah Stephen Green Lamb (1789-1844) and their son,

Thomas Goold Lamb (1811-1896) and Jane Blossom Lamb (b. 1811 and their daughter,

Elmira/Almira Lamb Hill (1845-1922)and Orrin Hill (1825-1906).

William Hill married Loretta Tobin.

Son Thomas William was my father.

Elizabeth was not the wife of the cited John Lamb, who is extant in Wiltshire not Essex. See my comment on that profile, which has however not been actioned. Either the marriage should be removed altogether or better, the correct John Lamb(e) should be added as her husband.

I dispute the statement above 'Like many of his Aylett relations, he was a Royalist'. There was a smallish set of Royalist Ayletts. mostly the Magdalen Laver family, who got a lot of subsequent publicity. But most of the Essex Ayletts were to a greater or lesser extent supporters of Parliament, like most of the Essex population. Even Dr Robert Aylett, who probably grew up with John Lambe (his father Leonard was a guardian of the Lambe children) managed to keep his job with Parliament, having worked for Laud like Lambe did. Jeremy Aylett, who inherited Durwards, was the local Parliamentary magistrate and carried out all the weddings; his cousin James was in the parliamentary army. I think John Aylett of ML was the only sequestrated Aylett.

Please can you look at this profile. 'Find a grave' source link has a death date of 1639 but this profile suggests death before 1581. Bearing in mind the significant difference in dates this profile is now listed as requiring attention.

Thanks Carol. I have changed death date to uncertain. Please see the notes above regarding the "find a grave" information.

Find A Grave has some very dodgy data - not in general a good source in my view.

Aylett-65 and Aylett-42 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth date and location, same husband

Aylett-68 and Aylett-65 appear to represent the same person because: same person, spouse, listed on same spouses profile.

Aylett-65 and Aylett-42 are not ready to be merged because: Inconsistencies with dates and relationships need further investigation

Aylett-68 and Aylett-42 are not ready to be merged because: There are unresolved differences between the two profiles. Not sufficient similarities to indicate they are the same person.

Merging the three Elizabeths (Aylett-42, Aylett-65,Aylett-68), is a bit problematic.

One shows spouse as John Lamb, another Thomas Lamb, and a third both John and Thomas.

Birth dates/places: 2x, 1552, England / 1x 1570, London, England. Death dates/places: 27 Nov 1639, Roxbury, CT / 29 Nov 1639, Roxbury, MA / 1581, England

On Roxbury, CT: "Originally a part of Woodbury, the town was incorporated in October 1796." - Wikipedia

No sources are provided on any of the three profiles. PMs should work together to determine what is correct, mark uncertain information as such in the data section, note unresolved conflicting information in the bio section, and provide sources.

If resolving the issues will take more than 30 days, the proposed merges can be moved to unmerged match (or rejected if it becomes clear these are actually different people). But working toward merging them is the best solution in light of Wikitree's mission goal of one profile per person.
