Biography

The spelling of the family surname varied over the years between Hare, Hair and Ayre and has been written below as recorded at the time.

John Ayre was born in 1853 at Winterton, Lincolnshire, the son of William Hare and Ann Cooper. ^[1]

In the 1861 census John Ayre was living with his parents at West Marsh Road, Barrow on Humber. He was aged 7 years. . ^[2]

In 1871 John Hair was living with his parents at Haven Rd, Barrow on Humber. Aged 17, he was working as a brick maker. ^[3]

In 1881 the family was living at Nessend Farm Brickyard, Barton on Humber. John Hair, aged 27, was a tile maker. ^[4]

John Hair married Annie Elizabeth Hopper on 25 November 1884 at St. James' Church, Hull, Yorkshire. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a bachelor aged 28 and a brickmaker. His father was named as William Hair, also a brickmaker. Annie was a spinster aged 25. Her father was named as Robert Hopper, a tallow chandler. At the time of their marriage John was living at 4 Staxxx Buildings, Porter St and Annie at 6 Faith Terrace, Walker St [both in Hull]. Their witnesses were William J Hare, John's brother, and Jane Cook. ^[5]

This couple had six children named Robert Hare born 1886, Unnamed female Hare born 1887, Percy Hair born 1890, Margaret Ann Hare born 1891, Robert Hopper Hair born 1894 and Delia Hair born 1896. The children were all born in Barton upon Humber.

Son Robert Hare died in 1886 in infancy. ^[6]

He was buried on 2 May 1886 at Barton St Peter under the name Robert Hair. The burial register recorded Robert's last address simply as Barton on Humber and his age as 4 days. ^[7]

Their unnamed daughter also died in infancy in 1887. ^[8]

Percy Hare was baptised on 13 July 1890 at Barton St Mary. The family was then living at White Cross St and John was a labourer.
Margaret Ann Hair, Robert Hopper Hair and Delia Hair [or Heir] were all baptised at Barton St Peter; Margaret on 13 December 1891 [born 18 November 1891], Robert on 23 October 1894 [born 1 October 1894] and Delia on 13 February 1896 [born 12 January 1896]. The family was still living at White Cross St and John was recorded as a labourer [Margaret and Delia] and as a publican [Robert]. The children's dates of birth were recorded in the baptismal register. ^[9]

In the 1891 census John and Annie Hair were living at the Jolly Sailor Beer House, White Cross St, Barton on Humber. John, aged 35, was working as a brick maker. Annie was aged 30 and son Percy was aged 10 months. A visitor, Ada Hodson, aged 18, was staying with them and Sarah Cormack, aged 14, was their live-in general domestic servant. ^[10]
Of interest John's paternal uncle Robert Hair and family were living at the Jolly Sailor in 1881.

In 1901 the family was still living at the Jolly Sailor Tavern. John Hair, aged 47, was a labourer at the cycle works. John may have been working for his brother in law Fred Hopper, a cycle manufacturer. Annie was aged 40. Children Percy, Margaret, Robert and Delia were aged 10, 9, 6 and 5 years respectively. Also living with them was a cousin Frances Nicholson aged 24. ^[11]

Wife Ann Elizabeth Hair died in 1902 aged 46 years. ^[12]

Ann had been born in 1855, her age was lowered in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.

Ann Hair was buried on 30 October 1902 at Barton on Humber. The burial register recorded her last address simply as Barton and her aged as 46. ^[13]

John Hair remarried to Sarah Jane Arnold on 13 September 1903 at Barton St Peter. Their marriage certificate recorded John was a widower aged 46 and a shopkeeper. His father was named as William Hair, a labourer. Ann was a spinster aged 24. Her father was named as William Arnold, deceased. At the time of their marriage both parties were residing at Burgate [street name]. Their witnesses were Thomas Bell and Gertrude Arnold, Sarah's younger sister. ^[14]

This couple had two confirmed children named William Ernest Hair born 1903 and Annie Elizabeth Hair born 1904.

Son William Ernest Hair died in 1903 in infancy. ^[15]

He was buried on 14 November 1903 at Barton on Humber. The burial register recorded William's last address simply as Barton and his age as 18 days. ^[16]

Daughter Annie Elizabeth was baptised on 10 November 1904 at Barton St Mary. The family was then living at Priestgate [street name] and John was a licenced victualler. Annie's date of birth was recorded in the baptismal register as 9 October 1904. ^[17]

John's son from his first marriage Robert Hopper Hair died in 1905 aged 11 years. ^[18]

He was buried on 1 April 1905 at Barton on Humber. The burial register recorded Robert's last address simply as Barton and his age as 11 years. ^[19]

In the 1911 census John, Sarah and Annie Hair were living at 11 Beck Hill, Barton on Humber. John, aged 58, was working for himself as a hawker. Sarah was aged 31 and Annie aged 6. ^[20]

John Hair died in 1932 aged 79 years. ^[21]

Sarah Jane Hair died in 1936 aged 57 years. ^[22]
