The engineer of the steamer Kelpie, John Ayre, met with a violent death at about 10 o'clock on Monday night. The steamer, it appears had proceeded about 50 miles down the river, having cleared out for Balranald, but immediately after the occurrence returned to Echuca. An inquest was held at the Bridge Hotel, at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, when the following depositions were taken :—
Robert Davey, master of the steamer Kelpie, deposed : I have this day seen the body of the deceased John Ayre, now lying at the Bridge Hotel. The deceased was engineer on board the Kelpie ; about ten o'clock on Monday night I was in charge of the boat, on the River Murray, going to Balranald ; when about fifty miles from Echuca, about the hour named, the boat missed a bend in the river, and would not come round ; I called out to the deceased to stop the boat; I received no reply ; I called out a second time, when I found the boat was not stopped ; there was no reply ; the boat swung round, and caught a limb of a tree ; the engines stopped ; the fireman informed me that he could not see the engineer ; I ran the boat into the bank ; went down to the engine-room, and found the deceased jammed in the crank of the engine, and dead.
I am of opinion the deceased was in the act of coming from the stoke-hole to the platform to stop the engine, and that a branch of a tree, which the boat ran foul of, struck the deceased on the back and drove him on the crank of the engine, this causing his death
