Benjamin was born in 1843. He was the son of William Ayres and Eliza Daggett.
He married Martha Samuels. He was shot accidentally by Sargent W. H. Blodgett near Pine and Garrison Ave. in St. Louis on January 10, 1877. Blodgett had dropped his pistol and it was discharged by the fall. Benjamin died twenty-four hours later. They were the parents of two daughters,
