Biography

Moses Ayers was born on October 25, 1750, in Somerset, Somerset, in the English Province of New Jersey. He was the son of Aaron Ayers, b: 14 Jul 1708 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey. His mother was Hannah (Ilsley) Ayers, b: ca. 1720 in Woodbridge, Middlesex, New Jersey. [1]

Moses Ayers (aka Ayres) married Elizabeth Vittito in 1773, in her native district of Fairfield, South Carolina. They were approximately the same age. The couple had 6 children:[2]

  1. Moses Ayers Jr., b: 1 May 1774 in South Carolina (?) [3]
  2. Sarah Ayers b: 6 Aug 1776 in Fairfield, South Carolina, USA
  3. Jacob Ayers b: 6 Sep 1779 in Fairfield, South Carolina, USA
  4. Sarah Izabel Ayres b: 1 Jun 1783, Fairfield, South Carolina, USA
  5. Daniel Ayres b: 16 Dec 1792 in , Fairfield, South Carolina, USA
  6. John Gresham Ayers b: 1801 in Fairfield, South Carolina, USA

Elizabeth (Vittito) Ayers is said to have died around 1802, some say in Alabama, but that is not possible as no American settlement was allowed there (it was still sovereign Native American Indian territory), at that time. She most-likely died in her native South Carolina.

After the War of 1812, with the separation of Alabama from what was called Mississippi Territory and its opening to American settlement, Moses Ayers moved his family to what is now Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama. He died on May 28, 1828 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Alabama, USA, having lived a long life of 77 years and having traveled a long way from his native New Jersey.[4][5][6]

Moses' oldest son, Moses Ayers Jr. served as a private during the War of 1812 in 1 Regiment (Pipkin's), W. Tennessee Militia. [7] Born in South Carolina in 1774, he married Rachel McFadden in 1790 in Fairfield, SC. The couple first lived in South Carolina; then they moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 1802. They had moved on to Hardiman County, Tennessee, by 1805 as it opened to American settlement, displacing local Native Americans. After 1812, it's said that Moses Ayers Jr. and his family moved to Ackerman, Choctaw County, Mississippi, where he died on September 2, 1841. His sister, Sarah Izabel (Ayers) Snow was already living in Ackerman, Choctaw, Mississippi, by then.[8][9]
