Life

""In 1645 he was one of Haverhill's thirty-two land owners and in 1650 his property was valued at 80.

His name repeatedly appears in Haverhill records in connection with lands and in 1660 he built a new house.

He was a famous hunter and trapper and his skill and sagacity in woodcraft equaled that of the Indians with whom he was in a constant rivalry that not infrequently amounted to open warfare.

"About 1665 a serious trouble with the natives obliged him in order to save his life to remove secretly and without his family to Connecticut where he settled in what is now known as Ayers Gap, in the vicinity of Franklin, where he lived by himself pursuing his favorite vocation and many traditions of his adventures with Indians and wild beasts form the theme of stories related of him by his posterity.

These tales delineate him as a man of great endurance, heroic fortitude, and striking eccentricities.

"Just before his death his son Joseph joined his father in Connecticut bringing with him his children Joseph and Timothy.

Their descendants still remain in Franklin.

John Eyer of Haverhill and his wife Mary conveyed land in Haverhill, to his brother Obediah Eyer of Haverhill on 11 July 1666.[2]

Death Location

Burial

Pentucket Cemetery, Haverhill, Essex County, Massachusetts[3]

Erroneous birth date: Note that there are some databases which give a birth date for 1 Nov 1633 in Haverhill. This is actually the birth date for his brother Peter.

John and Hannah (_____) Ayer had only one son John: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ayers-390.

In addition, there is no birth record for a John Ayer in Haverhill in 1633. The earliest Ayer birth recorded in Haverhill is the son of Ayers-390, John, b. 18 March 1647/48.

It was the John who married Susanna Symonds who d. 2 August 1675 (in Brookfield, not Haverhill; all reference to Susanna Symonds should be removed, except perhaps a note distinguishing the two men).

It was John's son Joseph who removed to Franklin; I can find no evidence that John ever did (despite Ebenezer Treman's story, which also has John dying in 1675 at Brookfield).

In any case, John was of Ipswich in March 1693/94 when he sold to his son Nathaniel, of Haverhill, all his right, title and interests of lands, commonages, etc., and to Robert Swan, Jr., of Haverhill, three hundred acres lying on the north side of the Merrimack River purchased of Jonathan Danforth, wife Mary consenting (Essex Deeds, Vol. XIX; XI).

I would like to ask you to reconsider the merging of Ayer-642 and Ayres-686. These two profiles are similar and need to be modified once the merge is done. Ayer-642 has sources that are solely based on Ancestory tree information, and though it may be they are applicable it is true there should be more definitive sources. So I'm told.

Ayres-686 and Ayers-2077 appear to represent the same person because: Both son of John Ayers & Hannah Evered.
I see that a merge was proposed and rejected at one point between Ayers-686 and Ayer-642, but I don't see any notes as to why it was rejected. I would like to propose that that potential merge be reconsidered, with deference given to the facts on Ayers-686 since that profile is well-documented and Ayer-642 is unsourced.

There are two books that describe John Ayer/Ayers, and I suspect the second one has accidentally included the death record of the other John Ayers.

1. John Ayers (our Ayres-616) married Susannah Symonds, moved from Ipswich to Brookfield Mass in 1672, was killed 8/3/1675 in a skirmish with Indians at Brookfield, Susannah died 1682. https://archive.org/stream/recordofdescenda00byuwhit#page/8/mode/2up

2. John Ayer (our Ayres-686) born 1623, married Sarah Williams 1646 then Mary Woddam 1663, lived in Haverhill MA, then moved to CT because of Indians. This book says he was killed 8/3/1675 in a skirmish with Indians at Brookfield, but why would he be 50 miles from his home in CT? https://books.google.com/books?id=OzlZAAAAMAAJ&dq=inauthor%3A%22Ebenezer%20Mack%20Treman%22&pg=PA1173#v=onepage&q=john%20ayres&f=false

Ok, I agree the same guy was likely not simulatneously married to Sarah Williams and Susannah Symonds.

So, it makes sense to have one (Ayres-686) married to Sarah Williams, and the other (Ayres-616) married to Susannah Symonds (Symonds-411). I removed Susannah as the wife on this profile to avoid future confusion like mine.

I also suspect the death info on this record may be incorrect -- I suspect it's only Ayres-616 who died in a skirmish with the Indians on 8/3/1675.

In reference to the record below, I concur with Carol Parente.

Ayre s 616 and Ayres 686 are not a match.

John was killed in 1675 and Susanna lived until 1682/3. I don't see how John could have had any other wife than Susanna. She, as his widow, presented an inventory of his estate in Salem and said I have seven sons and one daughter.

I am asking... there seem to be multiple wives associated with this person. Susanna (Symonds) Ayers is listed as the wife of Capt. John Ayers-616 with good documentation. Her record shows the same offspring as the Sarah (Williams) Ayers also listed here.

There are also two Sarahs listed as wives. Can anyone help with this?

Ayres-616 and Ayres-686 are not ready to be merged because: Ayers 686 has marriage data not consistant with Ayers 616. There are multiple marriages that need to be researched before a merger is done.
