Chandrasekhara Subrahmanyan Ayyer born in Madras, the son of Chandrasekhara Iyer and Parvati Ammal. He was married to Sitalakshmi Balakrishnan and was employed as a Government Officer, working as the Deputy Auditor General of Northwestern Railways in Lahore, when his son, Subrahmanyan was born. [1] The family moved to Madras in 1918 when he was transferred.

He was part of a family of physicists and other intellectuals.[2]. Both his brother and his son won Nobel prizes in physics.

His name is most often shown as Iyer, but his son's Nobel biography, written in the first person, shows Ayyar.
