Elkanah Babbitt was a leading figure in Berkley. When Berkely was formed from parts of Taunton and Dighton in 1735, the first town meeting took place in his house on May 12, 1735. His sons moved to various towns situated along the western bounds of Connecticut and Massachusetts, ranging from New Milford, Conn., to New Ashford, Mass.
Elkanah Babbitt seems to have followed his sons. For example his son Isaac moved to New Jersey, and Elkanah and his wife were living in Mendham, N. J. in April, 1754. He finally returned to Berkley and died there April 1, 1754
In 1773 his wife Mehitable was living in New Ashford, Mass. with her son Amariah
