Stephen Babcock writes that family tradition records Elihu's birth as "the day of the Great Swamp Fight" fought between New England colonial militia and the Narragansett tribe in December 1675, near the villages of Kingston and West Kingston (present-day South Kingstown) Rhode Island. [1] Elihu had a mental disability described in some family records and recollections. His family provided for his care through out his life.
An agreement dated 9 February 1725/26 was signed by his six brothers in the support of their brother Elihu who was unable to support himself. (transcribed in the appendix section of "The Babcock Genealogy" (page 546) with a later agreement from 1745 signed as Elihu's needs became greater and some of his brothers had passed on. [2] It was recorded in the probate records on 25 January 1743/44 in Westerly, Rhode Island.
A researcher's work posted on Family Search asserts that she found documents showing the family of John Babcock (Jr. probably) provided for Elihu and the estate of their father John Babcock was not settled until after Elihu's death when brother Job was recompensed for late life care and others for his funeral expenses for Elihu. This research sets Elihu's death as about 1758. He had resided in Connecticut, but at the end lived with Job Babcock, so he could have died in Rhode Island. The researcher speculates that Elihu was the father of Amos Babcock who married Elizabeth Brand. [3]
