Arnold Babcock was first married in RI to Abigail Knight. At her death, their children may have lived with their mother's sister. Arnold is believed to have moved to Lanesboro or Adams MA, In 1806 he remarried Amy Kimball, and began a second family. He lived to at least 1850, when he was enumerated in Pownal VT with his wife, daughter, and son-in- law, LD Jepson, in the Jepson home. His death record has not been found. It is suggested he died in RI on a visit to his older children.
In 1839, at the age of 74, he deposed for the benefit of his sister, Elizabeth Cranston, as she pursued her husband's RW pension. In it, he stated he had been a groomsman at his sister's wedding, at Johnston RI in Dec 1783, The marriage was officiated by Caleb Nichols, elder of the Baptist Church. The Cranston pension proves Arnold is the son of joseph. June Nash Lindquist's work has corrected the Babcock genealogy on this line.
The mention of Elder Nichols is significant, as he was a leader in the RI Baptist community who relocated to Pownal VT, with members of his flock. Both the Babcocks and the Kimballs followed the migration from RI, to Berkshire Co MA, and then into Pownal VT. It seems likely the presence of a Baptist community was a motivating factor for the move. Adams-21565 15:51, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
