Clara Babcock was born on 26 Feb 1862 (Uncertain) in Upper Sackville, Sackville Parish, Westmorland Co., New Brunswick daughter of David Babcock and Abbie (Sears) Babcock. These names are seen in Clara's marriage record and death records. Additional last names that she used in public records are: Sears, Thompson, Polley, and Pauley based on her mother's remarriage and her own marriages and possibility that her mother and father had not married. This makes following her records somewhat difficult.
Clara's father David Babcock is not seen in records with her, except for in one marriage record. Her mother is known to have married Jacob Thompson. During the 1871 and 1881 Canada Censuses Clara resides with extended family. In 1871 she is noted as 6 years old and lives with Caleb Babcock, age 77. This Caleb Babcock had a son named David Babcock as well as a nephew named David Babcock. [1] During the 1881 Census 16 year old Clara resides in the household of Willard Thompson and attends school. [2] . By 1891 Clara, now married, is seen in the Census as Claria Pally. [3]All these records suggest her birth year was 1865.
Clara married twice. 1stRichard Dixon Polley 13 Nov 1887 in the Polley Residence, Upper Cape, Westmorland, New Brunswick. (He went by the name Dickson Polley.) Her name in the record is Clara E. Sears supporting the theory that her mother and father had not married. [4]
Children:
Clara married 2ndThalbert Patterson on 23 Feb 1916 in The Manse, Port Elgin, Westmorland Co., New Brunswick[9]
Clara passed away 19 Nov 1949 in Port Elgin, Westmorland, New Brunswick. Her death record lists her last name as Pauley and may contain a mistake regarding her year of birth based on a possible over-estimation of her age at death. [10] She was buried in Fernwood Cemetery, Port Elgin, Westmorland, New Brunswick. Find A Grave: Memorial #128363317
Notes
On Clara's marriage registration to Thalbert Patterson it lists Clara's parents and David and Abbie Babcock, Abbie later married Jacob Thompson. I find no other record of this David Babcock,
On Clara's death registration it lists her husband as Richard Dixon Polley (deceased) and her mother as Abbie Sears with father being unknown.
1871 Caleb Babcock household contains children William, Cerrepta, and Clara all Babcocks. This would be Serepta Babcock who later married Nathan Sears. [11]
