Biography

On Sept 24, 1838. Hannah signed an affidavit for her sister, Elizabeth Babcock Cranston, in her (EBC's) pursuit of a pension from the RW service of her husband, Peleg Cranston JR. In the affidavit, Hannah states she is 78 years old, sister of Elizabeth Cranston and Arnold Babcock, being the surviving children of Joseph Babcock. She states she was present at her sister's marriage on 28 Dec 1783 in Johnston RI at her father's house. She resides in New Berlin NY at the time. This gibes with the Hannah Hazzard who is buried with James Hazzard in the Amblerville Cemetery in New Berlin NY. Harvard may be a flawed transliteration of Babcock. James Hazzard can be found in the 1810 Scituate RI census, enumerated with 2 women over the age of 45. This is probably Hannah and perhaps her mother, Ann Arnold Babcock. In 1820, still in the same place, both times next to his brother Robert, now with some younger people in the house, but he and his wife and presumably his mother in law are still there.

This gibes with James's probate, with his death occurring after that of his wife, in New Berlin, Chenango Co. NY. His brother Robert is executor, and no children are included. His heirs are his sister and two nieces. See profile for James Hazzard.
