Ernst 'der Streitbare' (the Brave) was the second son of Adalbert I, Margrave of Austria, of the House of Babenberg, and his first wife, Glismod (or Glismud)[1] His birth date is unknown, but it was perhaps about 1025-1028, or circa 1027.[2]

He succeeded his father as Margrave of Austria in 1055.[1] and was killed in battle, near Homburg in the Saxon Wars on 9 June 1075.[3] He was buried in Kloster Melk.[1]

He appears to have married twice. His first wife was Adelheid, daughter of Dedi II, Margrave of the Ostmark (of the House of Wettin) and his wife, Oda of the Ostmark. She was perhaps born about 1040[2] but definitely after 1039[3] and died in 1071, probably 26 January, and was also buried in Kloster Melk.[3]

The name of his second wife was Suanhild, who first appears in records in 1072[1] and who survived him, but her family name is unknown.[3]; [2]. Europäische Stammtafeln names her parents as Graf Sieghard VII (of Sieghardinger family) and Philihild, daughter of Hartwig II Pfalzgraf von Bayern.[1] but what this is based on is not clear.

All children discussed appear to be with his first wife, Adelheid von Wettin.

  1. Luitpold, succceded his father as Margrave of Austria;

They may also have been the parents of the following children;

  1. Justizia or Justicia or Justitia, married Otto II, Graf von Wolfratshausen, Graf von Diessen[1]; [2]
  2. Adalbert I, Graf von Bogen und Windberg;[2]
  3. Daughter (Unnamed), married as his second wife, Hermann I, Graf von Poigen.[3]
