Biography

Jean Baptiste Babin was born 23 March 1719. He was the son of Pierre Babin and Marie-Madeleine Bourg. He was baptized the same day he was born at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia. His godparents were Jean Babin and Marguerite Bourg.[1]

When he was 26, Jean Baptiste married Catherine Leblanc, age 20, daughter of Jacques Leblanc and Catherine Landry 30 Sept 1745 at Saint Charles des Mines, Grand-Pré, Acadia.[2]

On 5 September 1755, Jean-Baptiste was imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village Grand LeBlanc with 1 son and 4 daughters (spouses were not included on the list), and owned 6 bullocks, 4 cows, 4 young cattle, 18 sheep, 14 hogs, and 3 horses. His property and livestock became forfeit to the crown, and his family was required to prepare for deportation within 30 days. [3] [4] His brother Joseph was also on the list.

On 27 October 1755, Jean-Baptiste, his wife Catherine, and their children Marie-Madeleine, Marie-Josèphe and Marie-Anne as well as two unnamed children (a boy and a girl) were deported to Pennsylvania aboard one of the two ships that left Grand-Pré that day: the sloop Hannah 140 passengers, the sloop Swan 168 passengers. They both arrived in Pennsylvania on 19 November 1755. [4]

Jean-Baptiste appeared on documents in Pennsylvania in 1756. [4] He died between 1756 and 1762. [4] Catherine married Alexis Thibodeau on 17 February 1762 in Pennsylvania. She and her children found a permanent home in the province of Quebec after 1763.

Research Notes

According to Bona Arsenault, the family was deported to Maryland. [5]
