Catherine Babin was born about 1672[1]
in Port-Royal, Acadie, Nouvelle-France, daughter of Antoine Babin (1625–abt. 1687) and Marie Mercier (abt. 1645–aft. 1693). [2] Her parents and family were in Port Royal for the 1678 Census.[3]
In 1686 at Port Royal, Catherine, aged 14, was living with her parents, Antoine BABIN, aged 55, and Marie MERCIER, aged 40, and her seven siblings: Vincent, aged 21, Marguerite, aged 16, Rnne (sic), aged 12, Antoine, aged 10, Magdelaine (sic), aged 8, Francoise, aged 5, and Jean, aged 2. Though they didn't acquire much land, they did have 1 gun and more livestock over the years, reporting 1-1/2 arpents, 10 cattle, 12 sheep and 8 hogs. [4]
Catherine (13) married Jean Comeau (20) (born in 1665 in Port-Royal; son of Pierre Comeau and Rose Bayon) about 1686 in Acadie. Their known children were:
She was still living when her son Claude wed Claire Landry on November 11, 1721.[5] and possibly as late as when her son Pierre wed Margueritte Aucoin on October 10, 1729.[6] When Claude was married, his bride's mother was noted as being deceased, so clearly the priest was noting deceased parents. None of the parents were noted as deceased when Pierre wed. In fact they are most likely the Jean Comeau and wife noted in the 1714 census there with 4 sons and 6 daughters.[7]
Catherine died after Sep 1755 in Grand-Pré, Acadie, Colony of Nova Scotia, aged 82.[1]
Research Notes
The original 1686 Census spelled Madeleine as Magdelaine. A minor transcription error also was noted: Anne was spelled Rnne.[8]
