Ralph was born about 1555, the son of Sir William Babthorpe and Barbara Constable. He married Grace Birnand and was knighted by James I in 1603. Sir Ralph and his family were persecuted for their catholic beliefs, a reason for moving to London and then to the jesuit college in Louvain, France where he died in 1618.
Of their children, William, the eldest son, succeeded to the estate, Robert became a Benedictine monk, Ralph and Thomas became priests of the Society of Jesus, Katherine married Sir George Palmes of Naburn, Elizabeth married John Constable of Carthorpe, and Barbara became chief superior of the Institue of Mary, an order of Jesuit nuns.
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ralph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line.
