Burt was born in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in the Forest Hills section of New York City. He graduated from Forest Hills High School in 1946. He is the son of Irma M Freeman and Mark Bertram "Bert" Bacharach, [1] a well-known syndicated newspaper columnist. His family was Jewish.[2]
Burt studied music at Montreal's McGill University, Mannes School of Music, and at the Music Academy of the West. He holds a Bachelor of Music and received the degree in 1948.[2]
He did a tour of duty in the United States Army. After which he worked as a pianist for singers such as Vic Damone, Polly Bergen, Steve Lawrence, the Ames Brothers, and Paula Stewart. He was also the musical arranger and musical director for Marlene Dietrich for many years.[2]
Burt has been married four times. His first wife, Paula Stewart, and he were married for five years with no children. His second marriage was to actress Angie Dickinson. This marriage lasted fifteen years and they had one child, Lea Nikki Bacharach who sadly committed suicide in 2007. His third marriage was to lyricist, Carole Bayer Sager. They were married for nine years and adopted a son in 1985. He married his fourth wife in 1993 and they were together until his death in 2023. They had two children together. [2]
Burt has been a successful musician since 1957 with countless of songs, television musicals, variety specials, and films. He also released his autobiography entitled Anyone Who Had a Heart in 2013. He appeared as himself in the Austin Powers series.[2]
Burt was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972.[3]
He has been nominated 32 times and won 20 awards throughout his career.[4]
