MRS. BERNARD KNEES

Mrs. Bernard, nee Kunigunde Backer, a resident of Brown county, for the past 62 years, succumbed to heart failure, Monday evening at 10 o'clock, in her farm home in Milford township. She had been ailing, more or less, since undergoing an operation, in 1920, but was able to be up and around, most of the time.

Deceased was nearing her 76th milepost, having been born August 21, 1868, in Bavaria, Germany. With her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Backer, she emigrated to America in 1872, when but four years old. The family came directly to New Ulm, and later, Mr. Backer purchased a homestead in Milford township.

Before her marriage, which occurred in New Ulm, October 31, 1889, Mrs. Knees was employed as a maid in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Eisenmenger in St. Paul, for seven years. After the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Knees settled on a farm in Milford township, which had since been her abode.

Mr. Knees preceded his wife in death, in March, 1916. All of the five children, born to them, are living, namely, Frieda, Oscar, Ella, Bertha and Erna, all at home. Two brothers and one sister also survive. They are: Fred J. and August J. Backer, New Ulm, and Mrs. Herman Meyer, Redfield, S.D.

Following brief obsequies at the late home, at 1:45 o'clock, funeral services will be held this (Friday) afternoon at 2:15 p.m., at St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran church here, Rev. Gerhard Hinnenthal officiating. The remains will be laid to rest in the Lutheran cemetery.^[1]
