Biography

Emmy was born and raised in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware, USA. She has always been interested in genealogy, but only started real research approximately five years ago. Emmy would love to connect with family, no matter how close or distant the relation! One of her passions is learning about other cultures from across the world, so she hopes to connect with genetic relatives from around the globe. Emmy strongly believes that all people are her equals; so no matter who you are, if there's a genetic link, please don't hesitate to send her a message!

Through her DNA tests, Emmy has found that she is approximately 14% Ashkenazi, but hasn't been able to find where this part of her DNA came from. Her mother has taken a test and has no Ashkenazi DNA.

Her paternal grandmother's (Betty) father (John) left the family and moved away when Betty and her sister (Dot) were young, so there isn't any information about him within the family.

However, Betty and Dot had a half brother (Ken) who they shared their mother with. Emmy connected with a half 1st cousin 1x removed (William) and his daughter (Lindsay) who is Emmy's half 2nd cousin and Ken's granddaughter.

Neither William or Lindsay have Ashkenazi DNA, so Emmy wouldn't have gotten hers from her great grandmother (Ada) who is also Lindsay's great grandmother.

It is possible that Emmy's Ashkenazi DNA came from John. It is also possible that it came from her paternal great grandmother's (Alice) side, though unlikely, as Emmy's 5th great grand uncle is General Stephen G. Moylan, from County Cork, Ireland, and so far Emmy has only found Irish ancestors through Alice.

Through research Emmy has found cousins through her paternal great grandfather (Leon C.) and none of them have Ashkenazi DNA.

Emmy has tested at 23&Me, Ancestry.com, and FTDNA, and her Gedmatch kit is #LZ4133673.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Emmy or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Emmy:

Hi Emmy, It looks like we are 5th cousins. I see you are interested in your Ashkenazi heritage. When I took the 23andME test it did not show Ashkenazi. But recently I uploaded the same test to My heritage and it shows 2.9 percent. I would recommend looking more at your Myers-Shively connection as a possible joint source.

Hi, Emmy

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s very important to read and understand the Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Let me know if you have any questions and have fun!

Hello Michele, I'm so confused. I thought adding my DNA info would match me with other users? I can't find any information showing matches to anyone.

Wikitree doesn't have the ability to store your raw dna data. It would display your DNA test info on the profiles of any ancestors you are connected to. This profile is for a cousin on mine, you will see my test info and another person. The other person and I are not DNA matches because she is on one side of Kathleen's family and I am on another. However, anyone who is descended from Kathleen should match us both.

Hope this helps

Hi Brian! I'm so sorry I never answered your message. I haven't been on this website very much, but I'm back and trying to get a hang of how this place works. I'm not sure how to look at your tree. It would be awesome if we're related! Let's try to figure it out!

Guess what!?

"Brian and Emmy are 19th cousins once removed"

How awesome is that!?

posted by Emmy Backer
Will that is distant cousins!!
posted by Brian Robertson
Wait! I added the line to my tree on Ancestry and we're actually 9th cousins 1x removed. That's a lot closer!
