Lt.-Col. Miles Roland Charles Backhouse was born on 24 November 1878. He was the son of Sir Jonathan Edmund Backhouse, 1st Bt. and Florence Salusbury-Trelawny. He married Olive Buxton, daughter of Lt.-Col. Geoffrey Fowell Buxton and Mary Harbord, on 14 September 1904.2 He died on 15 May 1962 at age 83.
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, England. He was educated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England.
He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1902. He was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) (and bar) in 1902. He gained the rank of Honorary Captain in 1914. He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He was Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel of the 8th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment in 1917. He was decorated with the award of the Territorial Decoration (T.D.). He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Northumberland Hussars Yeomanry, Territorial Army.
He was director of La Protetrice Insurance Company. He was director of Brixton Estate Ltd. He was vice-president of the International Sleeping Car Company.
