Biography

Mary Backus was born in Norwich, Connecticut, about 1677/1678, based on her cited age at death. She was the daughter of William Backus and his second wife, Elizabeth Pratt.^[1][2][3][4] The will of William Backus, dated February 8, 1693-4, names a daughter "Mary."^[5]

She married Thomas Hyde, son of Samuel and Jane (Lee) Hyde, of West Farms (now Franklin), Connecticut. "Thomas Hide was married with Mary Backus Decemb^r 1697:" in Norwich.^[1][2][4][6]

Mary (Backus) Hyde died in Norwich on March 27, 1752, "in the 75th year of her age" (Gravestone). "M^rs Mary Hide the wife of m^r Tho^s Hide Died March 27^th. 1752."^[1][2][7] She is buried at Plains Cemetery in Franklin, Connecticut, where her gravestone reads:^[8]

• There was another Mary Backus born November, 1672, (daughter of Stephen) and the two are often confused, as appears to be the case with Walworth.^[2]
