From the "Courier," Connecticut, June 14, 1820, p. 3,
- "On Sunday last (28th ult.) as Capt. Joseph Backus was walking near the Zanesville Brewery, his foot accidentally slipt and launched him down a precipice, so deep and rugged, that he expired in less than two hours, in consequence of the injury received by the fall. He was about 45 year of age and originated in Norwich Conn. and had sustained a good moral character during his residence in this country.---Zanesville (Ohio) Paper."
