From "The history of the descendants of Elder John Strong, of Northampton, Mass.," p. 41,

"Jabez Backus, b. in Franklin, Ct., June 3, 1777 (son of Ezra Backus and Mercy Lay, whom he m. Jan. 10, 1758); a tanner and saddler at Hebron, Ct. His epitaph says that he was 'a good Christian and an honest man.' He d. in Hebron, Ct., June 1, 1855, aged 78, having resided in Attica, N. Y. for 20 years (1834-54) and at Omaha City for several (1854)."

"Married --- ... At Plainfield, Mr. Jabez Backus, of Plainfield, to Miss Asenath Parkis, of the former place."
