Samuel, son of John and Rebecca (Hall) Bacon, was born in Dedham, Suffolk Co., Massachusetts Bay Colony, on 8 October 1665.[1] He became a farmer, settled north of the Charles River in that section of Dedham which in 1711 became Needham, and remained a bachelor for many years.
His farm, most likely inherited from his father, extended north from Great Plain Avenue to present Hunnewell Street, west of Webster Street. [2] His home was on the northern portion of the property near the present intersection of Hunnewell and Webster.[3]
He married first on 3 July 1705, just prior to his 40th birthday, ELIZABETH ACKERS,[4] the 37-year-old spinster daughter of John and Desiretruth (Thorne) Ackers of Muddy River (Brookline) MA.
In 1710 Samuel and his neighbors, successfully petitioned to have their section of Dedham separated off as the town of Needham and a few years later, in 1719/20, when the Needham church was established, he was one of the original signers of the church covenant. According to the church records, he had never before been in full communion with a church.[7] [5]
Samuel built a new home near his old house sometime prior to 1731 for that year, when he deeded the northernmost 20 acres of his homestead to his recently married and only son Samuel Jr., the land was described as being "near my dwelling house” and bounding on a corner of the "old house." The 20 acres deeded to his son was described as bounding northeast by "the highway that leads across the hill” (Hunnewell St.).[8] [6] Samuel also deeded to his son a small tract in Rosemary Meadow and half of his swamp south of Great Plain Road adjoining Matthias Ackerton's land.[7]
Elizabeth died on 24 September 1730;[8] she was 61.
Samuel married second at age 66 on 26 July 1732 REBECCA (PAINE) B0YDEN,[9] the 54-year-old widowed daughter of John and Mary (Day) Paine of Needham. Rebecca married first on 15 December 1714 John Boyden of Needham.[10]
In 1735 Samuel deeded his homestead to his daughter Johanna and her husband Ebenezer Skinner, who were living in Norton MA, on condition that they take care of him and his wife and pay £100 to his daughter Elizabeth Woodcock. The deed also included all his meadowland in Rosemary Meadow, land co-owned with James Kingsbury west of the ministerial lands, and land south of Great Plain Avenue co-owned with son Samuel Jr.[11] The Skinners accepted and moved to Needham.
Samuel, with his estate in order, lived for eight more years. He died on 26 November 1743, at age 78.[12] The date of Rebecca's death is not known.
