Biography

Thomas Pryor Bacon was born on November 14, 1819 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Edmund Pryor Bacon and Martha White Watson Bacon.[1][2]

On 13 August 1850, Thomas lived with his parents and 45-year-old Letitia Braddis in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. His father worked as a grocer.[3]

On 9 June 1860, Martha Bacon and her son Thos. P. Bacon lived in the household of Benjamin Smith, a real estate agent, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Thomas had attended school in the last year.[4]

On 21 June 1870, Martha and Thomas lived in the household of Jesse Smith (Benjamin Smith's son) in Philadelphia. Thomas worked as a clerk in a store and owned $2,000 in personal estate.[5]

Thomas was a member of the Green Street Monthly Meeting (Quaker) when he made his marriage intention on 18 July 1872, planning to marry Annie E. Ellis.[6] He married Anne Elizabeth Ellis on September 4, 1872 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. [7]The couple had a son, Ellis Williams Bacon, who was born on 27 April 1874 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

On 10 June 1880, Thomas and Annie, their son Ellis, and Thomas's mother Martha lived at 3212 Baring Street in Philadelphia. Thomas was a salesman, Anne was keeping house, and Ellis was attending school. A 24-year-old Swedish woman, Minnie Johnson, was a servant in the household.[8]

Thomas applied for a United States passport on 25 February 1886 in Philadelphia.[9]

Thomas arrived in New York City aboard the Campania on 14 May 1894, sailing from Liverpool, England. He was working as a merchant.[10]

Thomas applied for a passport on 16 February 1897 in Philadelphia. He was described as being 5 ft 5 inches tall, high forehead, brown eyes, large nose, medium mouth, round chin, deep brown hair, fair complexion, and an oval face. He was working as a merchant and planned a trip for a few months.[11]

On 9 June 1900, Thomas lived by himself at 3212 Baring Street in Philadelphia. He was working as a book burnisher[?].[12]

On 15 April 1910, Thomas and Annie and three servants, Margareth Smith, Sarah Hagan, and Kate Deitrich, lived at 3212 Baring Street in Philadelphia. Thomas was a manager for a lithographer business.[13]

In August 1919: "Mr. and Mrs. Thomas P. Bacon, of Baring street, West Philadelphia, are occupying their country home on the Old York road, adjoining Rosemary, the Barclay Harding Warburton estate, and also that of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis D. Williams."[14]

In January 1920, Thomas and Annie and four servants lived at 3212 Baring Street in Pennsylvania. Thomas was no longer working. The servants were:[15]

Catherine Ditrich housekeeper 68 b. Pennsylvania
Mary Bradley waitress 23 b. Ireland, emigrated in 1914
Anne Brown cook 28 b. Ireland, emigrated in 1916

Thomas died on 3 April 1923 at his home at 3212 Baring Street from chronic myocarditis and chronic nephritis.[16]

"Thomas P. Bacon died Tuesday at his home, 3212 Baring street. His death followed an illness of more than a year. he was connected with the J. B. Lippincott Company, publishers, of this city, in an official capacity, for a number of years. Mr. Bacon was 74 years of age and retired from active participation in business seven years ago. He was a member of the City Club. His widow and one son survive. The funeral will take place this morning. Services will be held at the house of Mr. Bacon after which interment will be in West Laurel Hill Cemetery."[17]

Thomas was buried in West Laurel Hill Cemetery in Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.[18][19]
