Biography

Thomas Bacon was born at Barnstable, Massachusetts Bay, on the last day of September, 1697, a son of Nathaniel Bacon and Ruth Doggett; he married Mary Skiffe of Martha's Vineyard -- his mother's native island -- on the 7th of September, 1721. No record of the couple is found thereafter on the Vineyard; they are however found on the mainland, at Eastham, where they had recorded children between 1722 and 1737... their eldest son and eldest daughter bearing the given names of Thomas's parents, Nathaniel and Ruth.^[1]

No definitive record of the death of the Thomas Bacon who was born at Barnstable in 1697 having been found (however, see Research Notes below), all that can be said with certainty is that his death occurred later than the conception of his last recorded child (born in April of 1737) -- after about August of 1736, and most likely within the bounds of Massachusetts Bay.

Research Notes

While this profile originally stated that Thomas passed away in 1698, no known primary source supports that date, and given the naming pattern of their children it is certain that this Thomas is the one who married Mary Skiffe in 1721. A genealogical website (http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~kinomine/genealogy/p83.htm) features a clipping stating that Thomas "removed to Eastham"; the source for that claim is not shown, but Thomas and Mary are indeed found at Eastham by 1722.

It is possible, but conjectural, that this couple may have been the "old Thomas Bacon the glazier" and his wife who died within two days of each other at Sandwich -- which adjoins Thomas's native Barnstable but is at some distance from Eastham -- in 1778.^[2]
