Biography

Esquire of the Bath, Architect, of London, England.

Background

He was the 3rd surviving son of John Bacon 'The Elder' RA, eminent British sculptor, and his second wife, Martha Holland. He was baptised on 15 April 1784 at St Marylebone, London, Middlesex.[1]

Upon his father's death in 1799 he inherited an eighth share of his estate, which was valued at £60,000 and divided equally among his siblings.

Marriage and family

In 1805 he married Henrietta Sophia Crocker, with issue five daughters.

Death

He died on 10 June 1818, aged 34.

Legacy

"His widow, two daughters and son-in-law, Sir Rutherford Alcock, British consul at Fuchow in China, moved to Shanghai in the fall of 1846, where they were part of a burgeoning community of expats, merchants and missionaries from England, France, and North America. Alcock made it a special part of his duties to superintend the established Chinese government and lay out the British settlement, which had developed into such an important feature of British commercial life in China. This included initially hosting a small church in his home, which his sister-in-law, Emma Bacon, described as '... an immense rambling Chinese House containing fifty two rooms, surrounded by courtyards, and divided by Galleries and Passages in all directions'."
