Sylvester and his first wife Harriett (nee Tinney) emigrated to Australia on the "Navarino" arriving in Port Adelaide on 25th September,1851. They had 3 children but only one (Mary Emma) survived and moved to Australia with them. After Harriett died in 1859, Sylvester married Frances Hulbert in 1860.
During his life he was a Policeman and a Publican. In Australia he lived in Adelaide, Goodwood and Unley. His religion was Church of England.
