Biography

Carl lived in Garstedt, Kreis Pinneberg, at Rugenbarg 40 (in the area of Hamburg). His widow was Elisabetha nee Weidner. the certificate of his death stated that his Father: Christian Christof Baer, whose last residence was Karlruhe, [De]; Mother: Rosalie [nee Schmidt and later legitimized] Herrmann, who last lived in Offenburg in Baden, [De]. Cause of death [Todesurfache]: Carcinose nach frU (umlaut-u) operiertem Magen--carcinoma. [cavaet: frU must be a transcription error.] This must be the man whom Rosa Baer, then 73, listed as her "closest living relative" in 1911 on the manifest of the Cleveland when it docked at Ellis Island., NY,NY. She was bringing my father, aged 4, to Connecticut to join his mother for the 2nd time in his life.

Another view: this man could be a nephew of Rosa Baer.

I am eager to find WEIDNER relationships.

Rosa referred to her son on the ship manifest (the Cleveland) as "August Baer" (closest living relative) but did not list a place or a middle name. Somehow I sensed that she was very glad to have him to list. In the CLR denomination is implied that her husband and other relatives had already died.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Carl by comparing test results with other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Carl:

How do we find photographs of our ancestors?
A Years-Long Stone Wall was broken through yesterday in my search for this ancestor in my line. I've been looking for him ever since finding the Ship Manifest for The Cleveland from 1911 when Rosa Baer, then 73, brought my father Rudy Berg to America permanently and thus to his mother Anna Berg, who had married Robert Gustav Hilse. Rosa was "visiting her sister" Veronika Schmid in New Haven, she said on the manifest and was delivering Rudy to "his parents." Rudy's birth father is unknown and of Ashkenazi ethnicity. His only child Roberta is 31% Ashlenazi.
