Biography

According to a Webster family biographer, Nathan Bailey was a cordwainer (shoe maker) and a yeoman when he lived in East Bradford Parish. About 1749 he was found in Haverhill and he was now more prosperous and called a husbandman. Note that Nathan signed his own name "Bailey" on the document referenced below related to his father-in-law's probate, whereas his brother signed "Bayly".

Nathan and his wife became members of the Second Congregational Church at Bradford, MA by profession 14 Oct. 1733. In 1729, Nathan purchased lands in West Andover, MA, but only built a house and moved his family there in about 1750 - 51. He sold his home in Bradford to Rev. William Balch. It was just south of T. H. Balch's house on Main Street.[1] They were dismissed to the South Congregational Church at Andover, MA in Nov. 1764. He lived in Andover more than twenty years, until his death in 1775. [2]

Birth

We find from early vital records of Bradford that Nathan Bailey was born 13 December 1708 in Bradford, Massachusetts to Richard Bailey and Joanna Webster. [3] [4]

Marriage

Nathan was married to Mary Palmer, daughter of Samuel Palmer and Elizabeth Green, on 18 October 1732 in Bradford. [5][6] Although the Alfred Poor genealogy referenced below says that Nathan's spouse Mary was "probably" the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Palmer, there is no doubt that she was, on account of:

  • Samuel Palmer's Will, dated 3 March 1747/48, where he names "Mary Baily" as one of his daughters, and
  • Essex County Probate File #20450, dated 28 Dec. 1758, estate of Samuel Palmer, which declares that "Nathan Bailey of Andover and my wife Mary" have received their legacies from said Samuel Palmer (see his profile for complete text).
Children

The first four were recorded in Bradford:

Upon the death of his father, on 21 Nov. 1748, Nathan and his living siblings conceded their claim on their late father's lands in Haverhill, in favour of their brother Richard Jr. This land was adjacent to a section occupied by brother Amos. It is interesting to note that in the above-mentioned Deed, the late Richard Sr.'s older children including Nathan signed their names "Bailey", while the youngest signed "Bayley".[7] At the same time, Nathan and his siblings signed an identical document in favour of their brother Ebenezer.[8]

Death

Nathan passed away 18 January 1775 in Andover, Massachusetts. He was sixty-six (66) years of age. [9][10]
