Biography

Martha Bailey was born 24 May 1851 in Edwards County, Illinois to Uriah Bailey and Eliza (Bunting) Bailey.[1]

Martha was 9 years old when the 1860 census taker came through Edwards County, Illinois[2]

On 20 Dec 1869 she married Theophilus Sloat as licensed by the Edwards County, Illinois authorities.[3]

The now 19 year old Martha was recorded by the 1870 census taker living in the Albion Precinct of Edwards County, Illinois with only her husband, Theophilus Sloat[4]. They had 3 children.

Analysis of DESloat 20 Feb 2007:
Theophilus, with a family in IL, 'disappeared' just prior to 1880, and 'reappeared' in MO with a new family shortly thereafter. Needless to say, he didn't tell the MO family about the IL family, and the IL family knew nothing about the MO family. Not sure why he left - it would be interesting to get DNA tests for these 3 children (and for Ludella) to see if they might give a clue as to why he just left town abruptly...

With young children to care for, Martha remarried - this time to James S Boyd. They were married on 14 May 1877 in Albion, Edwards Co, IL,[5] and proceeded to add more children to the family.

Analysis of DESloat 20 Feb 2007:
Not sure of the legal paperwork involved, but apparently Martha was divorced (based on abandonment???) so she was legally able to re-marry.

At 29 years of age in the 1880 census, Martha was living with her (second) husband, James Boyd, and 4 children: Morris, Oliver, Ludella and William.[6]

Martha died 28 Jan 1890 in Edwards County, Illinois, and was buried in the Little Prairie Cemetery, Albion, Illinois.[1]
