Richard Bailey Jr. was the sixth of 9 children born (1717, Bradford) to Richard Bailey and Joanna Webster.[1]
Though he grew up in East Bradford, Richard's generation was the first to make the move from Bradford to neighbouring Haverhill. As described in the following reference,[2] Richard's father (Elder Richard of Bradford), had in 1725, along with his Bradford neighbour Caleb Hopkinson, purchased a 150 acre tract of land in Haverhill. He divided this land among his three youngest sons, Richard, Ebenezer and Amos, who each built similar houses and settled there, around 1740. This land was officially inherited by all Elder Richard's children upon his death in 1748, so it was necessary for the other siblings to formalize ownership by Richard Jr. and Ebenezer of their portions.[3] So on 21 Nov. 1748, Richard Jr. and his brother Ebenezer each received a deed to their respective portions of this land, neighbouring on a third section occupied by brother Amos. The above reference includes a complete transcription of the deed to Ebenezer, and makes reference to one (presumably identical) of the same date to this Richard Jr.
It is interesting to note that in the above-mentioned Deed, Richard's three oldest brothers signed their names "Bailey", while the four youngest siblings (including himself) signed "Bayley".

On 18 Aug 1741 in Haverhill, Essex, Massachusetts, Richard married Rachel Page.[4]
Richard and Rachel settled on the above-mentioned farm on “Old Spicket Path,” in the West Parish of Haverhill, adjacent to his brothers Amos and Ebenezer. It was here that Richard and Rachel had the following eight children:[5]
Rachel passed away in about 1800. [6]
In 1807, Richard moved to Hopkinton, New Hampshire, presumably to live with one of his children, perhaps Lewis. While there, he passed away in 1813 at the age of 96. The following death notice appeared at the time:
Richard Bailey,Sr., b. Bradford, Massachusetts on May 9, 1717, d. @1815 in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, and his wife Rachel Page, are honored by the Daughters of the American Revolution for patriotism:1) Donated Clothing for the Army. [8] At least two of their sons served in the Revolutionary War.
