Biography

I was born at St. Luke's Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on May 30, 1941. My parents lived in Richmond at that time. I believe my father was driving a Nolde Bread truck at that time. My mother was a C & P telephone operator. When my father joined the Navy during WWII and my mother worked in Richmond, I lived with my maternal aunt and her husband for a year on their farm in Lunenburg County. After that year, we moved to Houston, Texas to live with my father's brother and my father drove a city bus. My grandmother was very sick (lung cancer?) and kept begging my father to come home so we moved to the family farm in Lunenburg County. We lived there until I was in third grade; then we moved into town to an apartment in the Mathews' home. I lived in Kenbridge until the end of tenth grade when I went to boarding school in Raleigh, NC, at Peace College. Once I got over being homesick, I loved it. I graduated in the summer after my junior year at Peace and came back for my freshman year, taking business courses. My then boyfriend wanted me to join him at Lynchburg College so I went there and majored in English, graduating in 1962 after three years and a summer. My first teaching job was at J. R. Tucker High School in Henrico County. I taught 9th and 10th grade English amid the mud of a new school being built around me. From there, I taught at various community schools: Thomas Jefferson, James River Academy, Trinity Episcopal School, and finally at St. Catherine's School where I stopped teaching to become the Upper School registrar. I retired in 2003 and have been enjoying my hobby of doing family genealogy ever since.
