Biography

Luther Bailey was born in 1762, the son of James Bailey and Rachel Berry. When he was about 7 years old, Luther was moved with his family from Windham, MA (in an area later to be part of the new State of Maine) to Haverhill, New Hampshire, Then they relocated about 1779 to Peacham, VT. In May 1781, Luther and his brother Benjamin joined the Company of Capt. Nehemiah Lovewell, which had come to Peacham to protect the frontier.[1] He enlisted as a substitute for John Sawyer who was too old for duty. Luther served until Dec. 1781 and was discharged at Newbury, VT. After completion of his service, Luther continued to live in Peacham with his father James, where a picket fence had been built around their house for protection against Indians, British and Tories. On 15 Aug. 1782, Luther and his brother Benjamin were captured by the British at their father’s house and transported to Chambly, Lower Canada where they were imprisoned for three months.

Luther was married 31 Jan. 1784 to Anna Kincaid. She was born 14 Apr. 1763. They had eleven children, all born at Peacham, VT:[2]

  1. Rachel, b. 26 Nov. 1784
  2. Sarah, b. 30 Dec. 1786
  3. Charles Johnston, b. 20 Nov. 1788
  4. Isaac Newton, b. 15 Dec. 1790
  5. David, b. 9 Oct. 1792.
  6. Jonathan Parsons, b. 21 Oct. 1794
  7. Harvey, b. 27 May 1797
  8. Anna, b. 25 Feb. 1800
  9. Samuel, b. 19 Jun. 1802; d. 19 Jun. 1802
  10. Angeline, b. 16 May 1804, and
  11. Franklin, b. 8 Mar. 1807.

They also had a foster child Judith Thomson (1782 – 1878), who joined the family in 1786 and lived with family members her entire life. This family was living at Peacham, VT when the 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820 and 1830 censuses were taken. Luther Bailey was a farmer. He was captain of the militia of Peacham, VT for many years. In Mar. 1811, their household was ravaged with spotted fever, with 5 deaths within days.[3]

On 11 Sep. 1832, still a resident of Peacham, VT, Luther applied for a military pension, which was granted. On 25 Apr. 1839, the pension was transferred to Pittsburgh, OH, where he was living under the care of his two sons Jonathan and Franklin. They had sold their 175-acre homestead in Peacham in the fall of 1836.[4] Also in 1839, Luther relocated with the same sons from OH to the Iowa Territory. On 4 Jul. 1839, Luther marched in the Burlington, IA parade. He died just two months later 3 Sep. 1839, age 77, at Burlington, Iowa Territory.[5][6] He was probably buried in Burlington, IA at a now long-abandoned graveyard. He is commemorated on a plaque at the Burlington, IA courthouse honoring the burial in Des Moines County of seven Revolutionary War soldiers.

Widow Anna Bailey died 11 Mar. 1841, age 77.
