Biography

Joe Gene Bailey, age 83, passed away May 18, 2017. He was born January 12, 1934, in Austin, Texas, to parents John Orrie and Opal Bailey.

After graduating from Austin High School, Joe enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served his country for 20 years. Joe retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Senior Master Sergeant, and while there he was bestowed the great honor of serving as the Crew Chief of Air Traffic Control for Air Force One on each visit to the 'Southern White House' in Johnson City during the Lyndon Johnson administration.

After the Air Force, he went on to work more than fifteen years for Public Employees Credit Union, where he earned the title of Vice President in the Loan Department.

He loved sports and was quite an athlete in baseball, exceling as both a pitcher and first baseman. He played fast-pitch softball in the Air Force, developed a wicked knuckleball and power from the left side of the plate, while leading his teams to World Wide Air Force Championships.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents, and brother, John Edmund Bailey.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Perry Jo Bailey; son, Steven Joe Bailey and wife, Cynthia; grandson Ryan Michael Bailey; brother Ralph Wayne Bailey; as well as many other family members and friends that were always very dear to him.

His family would like to thank the dedicated and professional staff at Brookdale Gaines Ranch for their support, attention, and care to Joe during his six years of residence.

Visitation will be held at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home, with interment to immediately follow with military honors at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Memorial Park. Condolences may be left at www.cookwaldenforestoaks.com
