Biography

Lucy Lucinda Bailey was born in 1871, the daughter of James E. Bailey and Lucy J. Dempsey. She married William T. Chaffin. They had a daughter, Leona E. (Chaffin) Biggerstaff (1900-1995).Lucy died, aged 89-90, in 1961, and is buried with her husband, parents, and other family at Sams Pioneer Cemetery, Jasper County, Iowa. [1]

PARENTAGE-SPOUSE: Mid- Continent Library, Independence, Missouri, PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF JASPER, MARSHALL & GRUNDY COUNTIES, Chicago, Biographical Publishing Co., 1894, pages 354 and 355. "James E. BAILEY.... In 1866, after his return from the army, he married Miss Jane Dempsey, a native of Indiana and a daughter of Perry and Sarah (Hall) Dempsey, farmers, who came to Iowa in 1864 and settled in Polk, the adjoining county, where they still reside.....Mr. and Mrs. Bailey lost their eldest son, William P., by a distressing accident on the railroad at Colo, Story County, Iowa, in 1892. They have ten living children; George , a resident of Story County; Lucy, wife of William Chaffin, of Polk County; Myra, Marion, Jesse, Mary, Elzada V., Sarah, Harriett and Laura.

Their first child, William Perry, was born at the Benjamin Bailey home in 1867. The other eleven children were born in James and Lucy's own home southwest of Mingo. The eleven were: George Walter, Lucy Lucinda, Marion Edwin, Miriam Ammeretta, Jess Roy, Mary C. (who married Garrett Akins), Elzaida Valeria, Sarah D., Harriett M., Cathrine, and Laura Irene Bailey...."

In 1880, the Bailey family lived in Poweshiek, Jasper County, Iowa. The household included James Bailey, 38, born in Indiana, whose parents were born in New York; his wife Lucy, 33, born in Indiana; their children, all born in Iowa, the oldest four in school, William, 13; George, 12; Lucy, 10; Marion, 7; Mira (Miriam), 5; Jesse, 3; and Mart, 1. Also, James’ father, Benjamin Bailey, 78, a widower, born in New York (parents b. NY).[2]

Lucy Lucinda Baily, the daughter of James C.Baily and Lucy Jane Dunpay, and William Thomas Chaffin were married on 8 September 1891 in Maxwell, Story, Iowa. [3]
