Biography

Orsamus was born on September 22, 1765 in Methuen, Massachusetts, USA. He was the eldest of the 13 children of Col. Ward Bailey and Mary Sargent. He married Margaret Whitman of Ashburnham, Massachusetts (born Weydman of Meerfelden, Germany) on March 7, 1787 in Vermont. The 1790 U.S. Census shows him as living in Leamington Vermont at that time. Orsamus and his wife Margaret Whitman came from Leamington, Vermont in 1797 according to the book, "The History of Compton County, 1692-1896" by L.S. Channell. They were among the first settlers that wintered in Eaton, travelling thirty miles into the woods with no other guide other than a spotted line, and settling on a farm in Cookshire. They were to have 12 children in twenty years. Orsamus died on September 16, 1834 at the age 68 and is buried in Eaton, Quebec, Canada
