Biography

• Margaret Mary Bailey was born on the 5th of July 1909 to Nelson Douglas Bailey and Mary Melissa Sherlock in Silverton, Oregon, a town just northeast of the Capitol of Oregon, Salem. Soon after she was born her father, a teamster, moved them to a home he owned in Cathlapoodle. He worked in a logging camp there. ^[1] It is not known if this was an anual or semi-annual journey. He owned homes in both places. And all his children were born in Silverton, Oregon.
• By the next decade they are in the census for Silverton and half of her siblings were born. Her father was working in a sawmill. ^[2]
• Near the end of 1926 the last sibling was born and sometime in the next 3 years her father moved the family to Eastern Oregon. It is unknown if his brother, Levi, and his father moved at the same time. Or, for that matter if Margaret did. She is shown as divorced in 1930 and working as a cook in a private residence. ^[3] Her future, or possibly current, husband is doing road work in the same town. There was a daughter born before the census that is not shown on either of their census list.
• The next time we have a record for Margaret she is living with her husband, and has two children, and is living in Southwest, Washington. He is working in a paper mill as a fireman. This was a dangerous job. ^[4]
• By 1946 the couple had opened a Gas Station on the main north-south road, at that time. They seem to have had two residences. The house and service station are still located at the addresses although the business has been closed.^[5]
• Margaret married Everett in 1970. The record has her using her maiden name and they are both listed as single. There is no earlier record of marriage. Records were often lost or destroyed in floods and fires. They were both near retirement age so this may have been done for legal reasons. ^[6]
• The next year Margaret claims her Social Security benefits. Everett had done so two weeks before. ^[7]
• Margaret passed away in 1996, 4 years after her husband of over 60 years. ^[8]
