Nathan was a farmer. It appears he and his wife were probably living in the home of his brother, Haynes Bailey, at Fletcher, VT when the 1810 census was taken. He was living at Fletcher, VT when the 1820[3] and 1830[4] censuses were taken. By 1830 Nathan and his family had moved into his father’s brick home which he inherited with his father’s farm when Daniel Bailey died in 1832. In his will, Daniel made a bequest of half of his homestead to his maiden daughter, Sally, during her lifetime and the other half was left to her brother, Nathan, he to inherit the entire home at Sally’s demise.

Nathan lost his wife Sibyl when she died 23 Feb. 1840, in Fletcher, VT, at age 56. As a widower, Nathan was living at Fletcher, VT when the 1840 census[5] was taken. Listed as age 72 with his maiden sister, Sally, age 60, Nathan was living next door to their brother Haynes Bailey’s widow Lemira Bailey at Fletcher, VT when the 1850[6] census was taken. Nathan owned real estate valued at $600 at that time. Nathan Bailey, age 81, and his sister, Sally Bailey, age 70, were living together at Fletcher, VT when the 1860 census[7] was taken. Nathan’s real estate was valued at $1,200, but no value was assessed for personal property in 1860.

Nathan passed away in Fletcher, Vermont in 1861 at 83 years of age.[8] He was buried at the Bailey Cemetery. His headstone, broken at the base, reads: "Nathan Bailey, Esq. died Aug 20, 1861 ae 83 yrs."
